Compare CUTO and Microsoft Project precisely
The comparison separates schedule and resource planning from collaborative maintenance of domain project artefacts. Statements about Microsoft Project and CUTO require equivalent source and version dates.
Clarify the product before comparing
Name the Microsoft Project product first
“Microsoft Project” can now mean Planner with premium capabilities, the Project desktop client, Project Standard or Professional 2024, Project Online or Project Server. These offerings have different lifecycles, licensing models and feature sets.
A fair comparison therefore identifies the product, plan, deployment and specific SAP project scenario first. Only then should the same plan, roles and evidence be tested in CUTO.

What Microsoft currently documents for Planner and Project
The Microsoft column summarises current official Microsoft sources. The CUTO column states evaluation tasks rather than unconfirmed product claims.
| Criterion | Microsoft Planner / Project | CUTO | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduling and resources | Microsoft lists advanced dependencies, critical path, task history, scheduling, costing and resource management for Planner and Project Plan 3. Project Standard and Professional 2024 add separate desktop offerings with Gantt charts, baselines and resource levelling. | Test against the same project plan: Which dependencies, baselines, resource decisions and status changes are usable and traceable in the current CUTO build? | Microsoft: evidenced · CUTO: under test |
| Collaboration and the Microsoft ecosystem | Microsoft describes Planner on the web and in Teams for shared task and project work. The exact scope depends on Microsoft 365, Planner, Project and, where relevant, Copilot licences; some Microsoft 365 apps are sold separately. | Test the actual team workflow: Do not infer roles, external participants, comments, files, notifications, permissions or handovers from the interface; exercise them in the current build. | Licence- and configuration-dependent |
| Templates, customisation and reporting | Microsoft lists ready-made project templates, custom fields and reports. Depending on product and plan, Power Platform customisation, desktop templates, Excel exchange or server-based capabilities are also available. | Use one SAP project example and evidence template content, customisability, data provenance, reporting logic and export individually in the current CUTO build. | Product- and plan-dependent |
| Product transition and lifecycle | According to Microsoft, Project for the web was retired in August 2025 and transitioned into Planner. Project Online retires on 30 September 2026. Planner, Project desktop and Project Server need to be considered separately. | Before deciding, document the Microsoft product actually in use, its plan, migration needs, file formats and the intended CUTO contract and deployment scope. | Assess current and target states separately |

Practical test
Test one real SAP project plan side by side
Product state. Document the Microsoft product, plan, client, deployment and snapshot date.
Plan. Use a real slice with milestones, dependencies, resources and a baseline.
Team workflow. Run a change, comment, approval, report and export with the same roles.
Assessment. Evidenced, under test or open—without conflating product families or plans.
Claim boundary
No blanket product gap evidenced
This page does not claim that Microsoft Planner or Project is inherently unable to support SAP project work, templates, collaboration, reporting or customisation. Fit depends on the specific product, plan, setup and scenario.
Likewise, CUTO fit, Microsoft import or export and runtime behaviour count as evidenced only after testing the current build. The outcome hypothesis is limited to this: a like-for-like test may expose differences in project context, team workflow and operating model.
